“An extremely emotional work that truly touches everyone’s heart” Mapping Melbourne Festival

In recent memory, the world has been defined by open questions. When will our lives return to normal? When can we travel again? And when will we see our loved ones?

In her most personal work yet, Chinese Australian musician, composer and seasoned OzAsia Festival performer Mindy Meng Wang creates a poignant and immersive audio-visual meditation on life during global lockdown. In an emotional showcase of music and family stories set between her hometown of Lanzhou, Wuhan, Shanghai and Australia, Mindy uses ancient Chinese harp (guzheng), cello with electronic effects, synthesisers and film footage collected by Chinese and Australian filmmakers to humanise the profound worldwide experience of the global pandemic.

A topical introspective on the fear and uncertainty left in the wake of COVID-19, When is also an endearing reminder of the things we share in trying times despite barriers of race, distance or culture.

Guzheng: Mindy Meng Wang
Cello: Anita Quayle
Electronic Music: Daniel Jenatsch
