World Premiere | Australia

Handpicked by the OzAsia Festival team in a brand-new program, Playlist shines a light on the most progressive and exciting music we’re listening to right now. Featuring some of the best Asian Australian independent artists experimenting in electronic and contemporary pop on one stage.

Experimental Pop

"Uncompromising slice of art pop" The Guardian

Flexing her signature mix of electronics, live loops, saxophone and captivating vocals, Rainbow Chan melds catchy melodies and off-kilter beats made up of field recordings and found sounds. Driven by a DIY spirit and accompanied by the mesmerising live visual works of Carla Zimbler, her idiosyncratic brand of pop holds a mirror up to diasporic experiences by exploring her Weitou heritage (the first settlers of Hong Kong) through a modern feminist lens.

“One of experimental techno’s brightest new navigators” Bandcamp Daily

Corin Ileto is a Filipina-Australian electronic producer, composer and performer working in the field of performance art, sound design, theatre and club spaces. In her Manifest Live AV show, dark atmospheric compositions merge with hyper-digital projections to create new imaginary realms.

Her Live AV Manifest performance is a collaboration with Tristan Jalleh, a Malaysian-Australian video artist currently based in Hanoi.

Contemporary Pop

“Sophisticated and utterly compelling” Sydney Morning Herald

A meeting of music played on a 2,500-year-old guzheng instrument from China and electronic music borne of contemporary Melbourne, ORIGIN OF YOU is a collaboration between Mindy Meng Wang and Becky Sui Zhen. Performing composed and improvised music that speaks to the Asian-Australian experience, the pair channel spiritual energy passed down from generation to generation to reclaim their cultural identity.
